Ford Earns Top Mainstream Brand in J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

If you’re shopping for a new vehicle, quality is likely one of your top priorities. That’s why the latest J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study is exciting news for Ford drivers. For the first time since 2010, Ford ranked as the No. 1 mainstream brand in the annual study, highlighting the company’s commitment to building dependable, high-quality vehicles from the ground up.
At George Wall Ford in Red Bank, NJ, we’re proud to offer a lineup of vehicles backed by this recognition. Whether you’re interested in a capable truck, a family SUV, or a performance car, Ford’s renewed focus on quality gives shoppers even more confidence in their purchase.
What Is the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study?
The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) measures the number of problems owners experience during the first 90 days of vehicle ownership. Rather than evaluating long-term reliability, the study focuses on the quality and ownership experience of brand-new vehicles.
For the 2026 study, more than 78,000 owners and lessees of new model-year vehicles shared feedback across multiple categories, including infotainment, driving assistance technology, interior quality, powertrain performance, and overall craftsmanship. Vehicles with fewer reported problems receive higher rankings.
Ford not only claimed the top spot among mainstream brands but also finished third overall across all brands, demonstrating significant progress in vehicle quality.
Ford’s Commitment to Continuous Improvement
Ford’s achievement wasn’t the result of a single model or a one-time improvement. It reflects years of focused work across engineering, manufacturing, software development, and supplier partnerships.
According to Ford, the company created a more unified development process by bringing engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams together earlier in the vehicle development cycle. Ford also strengthened testing procedures, expanded software validation, improved supplier collaboration, and invested in experienced engineering talent to identify potential issues before vehicles reached customers. These behind-the-scenes improvements have led to measurable gains in customer satisfaction and vehicle quality.
Award-Winning Ford Models
Several popular Ford vehicles earned top honors or ranked among the best in their respective categories during the 2026 Initial Quality Study.
The Ford F-150, Mustang, and Super Duty each ranked highest in their segments for the second consecutive year. Additional models, including the Escape, Explorer, Expedition, and Maverick, all finished among the top three in their categories. In total, seven of Ford’s ten evaluated models placed in the top three—more than any other automaker in the study.
