Ford’s Heat Pump Technology: Enhancing EV Efficiency in Cold Weather

As the world increasingly embraces electric vehicles (EVs), many businesses are transitioning to EV fleets to take advantage of their environmental benefits and cost savings. However, one challenge that arises when using electric vans in colder climates is the significant reduction in driving range, primarily caused by the need to heat the cabin in freezing temperatures. Ford has addressed this issue with its innovative Vapour-Injected Heat Pump (VIHP) technology, which boosts EV performance even in sub-zero conditions.
Ford has incorporated this patented heat pump system into its European E-Transit Custom, E-Tourneo Custom, and the enhanced range E-Transit models. The technology captures heat from the outside air, even when temperatures drop as low as 20°F. The key advantage of the VIHP is its ability to use “free” ambient heat, significantly reducing the energy required to warm the cabin. This means more battery power is available for driving, allowing businesses to optimize productivity.
Both real-world and laboratory tests have confirmed that the VIHP can improve the E-Transit’s driving range by 7% to 10%. Ingo Krolewski from Ford of Europe highlights the importance of this: “For businesses that use vans, every kilometre travelled between top-ups means less downtime and more money earned.”
The heat pump system functions similarly to those used in homes and offices but has been further refined for enhanced efficiency. By using refrigerant gases, it absorbs and compresses heat from the environment, reducing the strain on the vehicle’s battery. When temperatures rise above 70°F, the system switches to cooling mode to reduce the reliance on air conditioning, helping to conserve battery life in hot weather as well as cold.
Ford has dedicated significant resources to refining this technology, including over 100 wind tunnel tests and 15,000 miles of on-the-road evaluation. The result is a highly effective system that maximizes both efficiency and comfort, no matter the weather. The development involved close collaboration between Ford’s engineering teams in the UK, Germany, and the US to ensure the technology is as reliable and effective as possible.
